Stephen (that's me) has more than 30 years' experience in training IT professionals. In the 1980's, the computer world was in its wild west age. The IBM standard was becoming established from the primordial sea of disparate manufacturers including The Acorn Torch, Atari 512 st, Commodore Pet, Research Machines and other now forgotten contenders. 

I am luckier than newcomers to the IT industry. Whereas they must learn a mountain of knowledge in a sharp learning curve when they set out, I started when systems were much simpler and needed only to learn what was new that month.

I was part of Inter-Action Social Enterprise Trust’s team who developed methods of learning new technology in schools, informal education (youth clubs), charities and small businesses. Remnants of those methods can be seen courses still be used today.

Over the decades I have been a programmer (I wrote database management software), typographer with desktop publishing, hardware engineer, network designer, Prestel administrator (there’s a blast from the past), gamesmaster, planetarium presenter and university lecturer. 

I became a Microsoft Certified Professional in the year it was launched. I suspect that, with an MCT Identity number of 8642, I may be the longest certified Microsoft Professional in the UK.
